Steps to Complete Background Check

Before students can begin with the College Corps program, background check clearance is one of the onboarding steps.

We highly recommend that you complete this background check clearance process as soon as possible.

  • The background clearance (Live Scan) can take up to 6-8 weeks and could limit your ability to start the program on time.

  • Live Scan, is a digital fingerprinting solution that captures fingerprints electronically and submits them directly to the Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) for analysis.

  • Students will do their Live Scan through the SF State University Police Department (UPD). When students use UPD, there are no upfront costs (out-of-pocket expense) as the billing goes directly to the SF State College Corps program.

  • Livescan/fingerprint services through SF State UPD are available via appointment only. Make sure you reserve an appointment ASAP, slot times go fast!

  • Fellows: If you are not in the SF/Bay Area in the June-July month to get Live Scan background clearance with SF State UPD, please contact college corps staff (Elizabeth or Samantha) asap.

  • Deadline: Make an appointment with SF State UPD and physically get this Live Scan/fingerprint process within one week of receiving your "Conditional acceptance - Onboarding/Enrollment Checklist To Do" email from your assigned college corps coordinator.

Students will:

  • For your LiveScan appointment, you must bring a printed completed copy of the REQUEST FOR LIVE SCAN SERVICE PDF.

  • Note: When using UPD for LiveScan service (physically going to UPD), Fellows will not have to do out-of-pocket expenses to pay for Live Scan service because when scheduling an appointment with UPD online, you will indicate that a Campus Department will pay-see below for instructions. To ensure you will not pay yourself, be sure to verbally tell UPD that you are with the Corps program and that the department should be recharged.

Example of COMPLETED LIVESCAN to send to College Corps Staff
  • The results of the LiveScan will be then sent directly to SF State UPD. Once SF State UPD receives results, they will inform ICCE (College Corps staff) as to whether you are cleared to begin at your site. Then, ICCE will inform you directly that you have been "cleared".

  •  You will not hear from UPD and please do not contact UPD for your status or results.  If you have any questions, contact ICCE.

  • The results of the LiveScan from the DOJ/FBI vary from a few days to weeks. We have no control over when the results come in.

I already did a LiveScan through another SF State program, such as Jumpstart do I have to do my LiveScan again for College Corps? I used SF State UPD to get my LiveScan done.

  • Yes. Per federal policy, LiveScan results cannot be transferred from one organization to another.

  • Although you used SF State UPD LiveScan services, your background results were sent directly to Jumpstart, not UPD (UPD will not receive a copy of the results). As mandated by our funders (Federal and State government), we/SF State UPD has to receive the background results.

In the past, I have worked with a non-profit organization, e.g. SF Ed Fund, and did my LiveScan with them and was cleared, do I have to do my LiveScan again?

  • Yes. Per federal policy, LiveScan results cannot be transferred from one organization to another.
