Steps to Complete Background Check (Live Scan Fingerprinting)

As part of your College Corps onboarding, you must complete a Live Scan background check. Processing may take approximately 4–6 weeks, so please schedule and complete your appointment as soon as possible.

What is Live Scan?

Live Scan is a digital fingerprinting process that submits your fingerprints to the California Department of Justice (DOJ) and FBI to complete a background check.

🔐 Important Reminders

  • Your background check must clear before your participation in College Corps can be finalized
  • Delays in completing Live Scan may impact your ability to begin service on time
  • Please do not wait until returning for the Fall semester to complete this requirement

📧 Questions or Need Help?

If you have questions or would like support with onboarding, scheduling, financial aid, or next steps, you are welcome to schedule an optional 1:1 onboarding check-in with a member of the College Corps team.

You may also contact us directly at collegecorps@sfsu.edu or visit us at HSS 206.

SFSU UPD – No Out-of-Pocket Cost

📅 Schedule Your Appointment

All Fellows must complete their Live Scan background check through the SFSU University Police Department (UPD) before leaving the Bay Area or departing for summer break. This is the required process for SFSU College Corps Fellows, and there is no out-of-pocket cost to students. The fingerprinting charge will be billed directly to ICCE.

Book your appointment using the UPD Live Scan Appointment Calendar:

Appointments are required and fill quickly.
Please schedule and complete your appointment as soon as possible after receiving your Conditional Acceptance email. Do not wait until returning for the Fall semester in August, as background clearance processing may take approximately 4–6 weeks.

What to Bring to Your Appointment

  • Valid government issued ID such as: driver’s license, state/government ID card, or passport.

The UPD Live Scan technician will know you are coming for College Corps based on your appointment sign-up. The technician will provide the required Live Scan form and waiver at your appointment for you to complete onsite.

Important

  • After your appointment, keep a copy/photo of your completed Request for Live Scan Service form

At the end of your appointment, the Live Scan technician will give you a completed copy of your Request for Live Scan Service form. This serves as your receipt and proof that your fingerprints were submitted.

Required Next Step

  1. Keep the completed Request for Live Scan Service form provided to you by the technician
  2. Take a clear photo or scan of the completed form
  3. Submit your completed form using the secure upload link below

Please do not email this document, as it contains sensitive personal information. Students may also submit a physical copy in person to the ICCE Office (HSS 206).

⚠️ This step is required. Failure to submit a copy of your completed form may delay verification of your background clearance and onboarding process.

What Happens Next

  • Your fingerprints are submitted to the California Department of Justice (DOJ) and FBI for processing
  • Results are sent directly to SFSU University Police Department (UPD)
  • Once cleared, UPD notifies the College Corps team
  • The College Corps team will contact you once you are cleared to begin service

🚫 Please do not contact UPD directly regarding clearance status updates, as they are unable to release results directly to students.

📌 Important
Background clearance processing times vary and may take anywhere from several days to multiple weeks. Please complete your Live Scan appointment as early as possible.

Question: I previously completed a Live Scan through another SFSU program (for example, Jumpstart). Do I still need to complete one for College Corps?

Answer: Yes. Even if you previously completed a Live Scan through another SFSU program or through SFSU University Police Department (UPD), College Corps is required to complete its own background check request process. Live Scan results cannot be shared across programs, and UPD cannot provide College Corps with a copy of another program’s results. Federal compliance requirements require College Corps to receive results directly through its own request process.

Question: I completed a Live Scan through another organization or nonprofit and was already cleared. Do I still need to complete one for College Corps?

Answer: Yes. Live Scan results cannot be transferred between organizations or programs. College Corps must initiate and receive its own DOJ and FBI background check results to meet federal and program compliance requirements.
