Neighborhood Resilience Initiative
The resilience initiative is a partnership between the City and County of San Francisco 's Neighborhood Empowerment Network (NEN), San Francisco State University 's Institute for Civic and Community Engagement (ICCE) to address critical issues defined by residents living in San Francisco's neighborhoods. Founded in 2009, the initiative is an alliance of academic and governmental organizations whose mission is to partner with neighborhood stakeholders as they design and implement community resilience strategies. By streamlining access to their academic assets and deploying them in a tactical manner in alliance to community driven planning process, this partnership is able to achieve cumulatively stronger outcomes for the neighborhoods they engage. Academic partners provide essential technical support for the Empowered Communities Program (ECP) and its toolkit.
ENGAGED LEARNING ZONES (ELZ)
Engaged Learning Zones are multi-year, place-based projects that focus university resources on a specific community in order to increase their leadership capacities.
Our first ELZ in District 11 enjoys strong support from San Francisco Supervisor John Avalos's office and the Mayor's Office of Housing/ Community Development. CSL students mapped local resources; interviewed stakeholders to help identify short and long term needs, and then supported the development and implementation of plans that can help build a more vibrant, economically robust, and socially inclusive City. Read more about the work we have been doing in D11 and D3 in the document below.
The Table of Contents and Executive Summary of our 46-page ELZ report is available in the pdf below. To receive a full pdf copy of the Report, please email Jen Gasang at jlgasang@sfsu.edu
Spring 2013, ICCE developed a Community Action Guide in order to help others who may not have experience in community-building duplicate some of the methods we used to build awareness for action and advocacy in their communities. Since each institution, program, and/or neighborhood has its own characteristics, the Guide is meant to offer fundamental instructions only. We hope that university/community partnerships such as the ones SF State has established and cultivated will add to the body of knowledge about what it means to be an engaged university.
